So, you’ve probably noticed that I don’t do too many full restaurant reviews as blog posts these days. Instead, you’ll get a lot more “mini reviews” by way of my Instagram. The thing with social media, though, is that “old” content quickly gets buried under “new” content, rarely to be seen again. To that end, I want to give some of these mini restaurant reviews more of a permanent home on the blog. That’s what this Quick Bites series is all about, at least for the foreseeable future.

What’s new in Michael’s foodie adventure world in Burnaby? Let’s dig in. (Click on each of the Instagram posts to read the full captions and swipe through the other photos, as applicable.)

Cafe at Mandeville (Gardenworks)

Who would’ve thought there’d be such a cute brunch spot in the middle of a gardening store? No, this isn’t going to be as fancy or creative as OEB Breakfast, but that’s not the point. The outdoor patio is great for enjoying an eggs benny or some pancakes.

R + D Kitchen by White Spot

Let’s be honest. White Spot has a certain reputation about either being more of a family-oriented restaurant or one for more mature patrons. With R + D Kitchen in Brentwood, they’re going for a more youthful, modern image, adding fresh menu items that are just a touch different. And I think it works.

Suren Cafe Restaurant

For the last few years, I’ve really become enamored with food from this region of the world. Grab and Go in North Van is great. We’re regular patrons at Cazba too. But, our Burnaby Heights neighborhood hasn’t really had a proper sit-down Persian restaurant until now. Suren takes over what used to be the Zeus (and Cristo’s before that).

Bb.q Chicken Hastings

I can’t be the only one who’s noticed that Korean fried chicken is popping up everywhere. In the span of less than a year (?), our little corner of Metro Vancouver has gained at least two or three KFC places. One of those is Bb.q Chicken, which confusingly doesn’t have barbecue chicken. They’ve got quite the range of flavor options to explore.

Punk Rock Pastries

I love me a good donut. And while Portland donuts have a bit of a reputation, the donut scene in Vancouver has certainly grown too. Whether or not you’re interested in their more “risqué” designs, Punk Rock Pastries delivers some seriously awesome pastries.

Wild Flour Pizza Co

Not all pizza is made alike. There will always be a place for mass market chains and Neapolitan pizza, for sure. Wild Flour departs from the norm, though, as they’ve got sourdough pizza and it’s every bit as good as you might hope it would be.

What Burnaby Eats Would You Recommend Next?

Last year, I highlighted several of my favorite places to eat in Burnaby Heights and Brentwood. I’ll probably need to revisit and update that list periodically, as we keep getting new restaurants, bakeries, and eateries in and around our humble Burnaby neighborhood. Glorious Bao just opened in the Amazing Brentwood food court, for example. And I see that Peri Peri Shack on Hastings and Sperling is open now too.

Where should we go next? If you want to keep up with my foodie journeys, I encourage you to follow me on Instagram if you haven’t already. I’ll always have new food recommendations on there for you to check out! Bon appetit!
