I grew up loving our school field trips to Science World. They didn’t happen all that often, but when they did, I was all over them. I loved toying around with the various hands-on exhibits, really experiencing science at work rather than just reading about them in books. Brain teasers, optical illusions… they put a lot of things in perspective and they really nurtured my insatiable curiosity.

The world needs more nerds and Science World Vancouver is 100 percent here to facilitate that.

Yes, keeping children entertained and engaged through the summer can be a challenge for most parents. Especially given current circumstances. Now that the 6-year-old’s summer school session is over, we’ve been trying to find fun ways to engage and challenge her. Science World is perfect for that, so we spent a few hours there over the weekend. Here are some quick highlights in 60 seconds or less.

One critically important thing to remember here is that Science World isn’t just for younger kids. It’s for everyone. When they assert that the “world needs more nerds,” they mean nerds of all ages and abilities. Remember when I embarked on the Vancouver Science Social “field trip” not once, but twice? Even during our weekend visit, we saw at least a few adult-only groups wandering around the exhibits. That’s awesome.

The current feature exhibit is still Arctic Voices, which we first had the chance to explore earlier this year. If you’ve ever wondered how you measure up against a polar bear, both in height and “paw” size, this exhibit is a great way to find out. Here’s the video, in case you missed it the first time around.

Science World, located at 1455 Quebec Street in Vancouver, is open daily from 10am to 5pm. You’re encouraged to book your visit in advance online. Note that the Wonder Gallery is operating at reduced capacity. Check the website for ticket prices and the latest information.
