We actually have a few Greek restaurants along our stretch of Hastings Street in Burnaby Heights. There’s Sfinaki near Gilmore, for starters. What used to be Cristos is now the Zeus. Socrates in the Heights is another super solid option. Continuing a little further east on Hastings, we arrive at Cozmos Cafe + Bistro on the northwest corner of Sperling Avenue. It doesn’t have “Greek” in its name, but they’ve definitely got Greek food.

Taking Out Our Dinner

As I mentioned in my review of Takara Sushi last week, we’ve been ordering a lot of takeout and delivery these past few months. I share a lot of what we eat through Instagram Stories, but maybe you’ve missed some of that. No sweat. I’m going to start sharing more of these mini restaurant reviews back here on the blog again. Today, we take a closer look at Cozmos Cafe and Bistro in North Burnaby.

We ordered some Greek classics for dinner the other night.

Cozmos Cafe - kalamari

Kalamari ($10.95). This is the appetizer size. You can also order it as a kalamari dinner for $15.95. I don’t know if I can chalk it up to the condensation of takeout containers, but the kalamari wasn’t as crisp as I would’ve liked. Maybe a few more moments in the fryer would’ve helped. It probably could’ve used a bit more seasoning as well. The squid itself was tender and not too chewy.

Cozmos Cafe - roast lamb

Roast Lamb ($17.95). Served with rice, potato and Greek salad. I didn’t realize this didn’t come with pita bread until I already got it. Lesson learned. We got a good portion of lamb that was swimming in some of its own juices wrapped in aluminum foil. Even so, the meat itself was a bit on the dry side. The rice had good flavor.

Cozmos Cafe - chicken souvlaki

Chicken Souvlaki ($15.95). Also served with rice, potato and Greek salad. Like the roast lamb, the chicken here was on the dry and slightly under-seasoned side for me. They were generous with the rice and salad though. I think there’s an option to add another skewer if you don’t think one is enough. I’d be curious how the beef souvlaki tastes and whether it is a bit more succulent.

Greekish at Cozmos Cafe and Bistro?

The menu at Cozmos Cafe and Bistro is varied, to say the least. You might remember the breakfast/brunch menu that I reviewed on this blog a few years ago. For lunch and dinner, if Greek isn’t your thing, Cozmos will happily dish out focaccia sandwiches, baked pasta, entree salads, and burgers with house-made patties, if you prefer. You can even get hot wings, chicken fingers and curly fries if you want.

For our part, the Greek food at Cozmos is just okay. Not horrible, but not exactly great either. If I’m doing takeout in the area, my current preference is for Socrates in the Heights. The roast lamb there is super juicy and flavorful with a generous portion. Back in the before times, when we’d venture further from our immediate neighborhood, we’d go to My Greek Taverna on Brunette in Coquitlam.

Cozmos Cafe + Bistro is located at 6691 Hastings Street in Burnaby, BC. They’re open from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm Wednesday to Sunday, and from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Tuesday for takeout and delivery only. They’re closed Mondays. Call (604) 205-5831 or order via Skip the Dishes. Visit CozmosCafe.ca for the full menu and more information.
