With all the restrictions and health guidelines, it’s been hard to lift those holiday spirits. This time has also presented an opportunity to reflect on what we value most. It’s also forced us to be a bit more creative. That’s why I was happy to hear that PNE WinterLights is proceeding this year with all the appropriate precautions in place. It’s a drive-thru experience — the 7th the PNE has organized this year — surrounding you in Christmas lights and holiday decorations. And mini donuts. You can’t forget about the mini donuts.

In fact, you get the chance to buy some mini donuts both at the beginning and at the end of the 30-or-so minute drive through Playland and the PNE Fairgrounds. Several of your favorite displays from last year’s Aurora Winter Festival are back. There are the cool animal light sculptures, for instance, as well as the rainbow light tunnel. The difference, of course, is that you get to drive through it this time.

The PNE WinterLights experience is different. You stay in your car and mosey along at a parade’s pace with all the other visitors. On the one hand, you can stay warm and cozy in your vehicle. On the other hand, you do miss out on those Insta-worthy selfie opportunities. It’s a trade-off, to be sure, but it’s obvious enough that the public is hungry for something this holiday season.

The majority of Vancouver Christmas events have been cancelled this year. This includes favorites like Bright Nights in Stanley Park and Heritage Christmas at Burnaby Village Museum. The organizers at PNE have found a way to work that keeps us safe, offering visitors a glimmer of the festive spirit amidst these challenging times.

PNE WinterLights runs on select dates until December 30. Buy your tickets online. It’s $39 for vehicles with up to 4 people, $49 for 5 or more, and $25 for date nights with two people after 9pm.

Disclosure: My family was invited to experience PNE WinterLights on media night at no cost to us. All opinions are mine.
