Admittedly, I can be quite “basic.” I post photos of my food on Instagram, I listen to Billie Eilish, and I enjoy Marvel superhero movies. I like a lot of popular things. (Or do I like them because they are popular?) Even so, I oftentimes feel like a square peg surrounded by round holes. I’m a bit unconventional, like how I’ve been freelancing and working from home for almost the entirety of my professional career. So, this “unpopular opinion game” going around social media seems appropriate.

In case it hasn’t crossed your Facebook or Twitter feed, the gist of the unpopular opinion game is simple. Name 10 things that you don’t like that everyone else likes. Off the top of my head, here’s my list of things I don’t like.

1. Reality TV Shows

It would be both unfair and inaccurate if I said that I disliked all reality TV. Sheepishly, I’ll admit that I was once a fan of The Apprentice and American Idol. Realistically (see what I did there?), it’s more like I don’t like dating type reality TV shows (like The Bachelorette). I’m also not at all a fan of the shows that generate manufactured drama (like Big Brother and Real Housewives). Documentaries are great, stories based on true events can be amazing, but the bizarro world of reality TV? Not for me.

2. Having Nothing to Do

I never complain about being bored, because there’s always something to do. Maybe it’s a good problem to have. It’s not that I’m a workaholic, per se, but I do think about what I could do often. Plus all the movies and TV shows I want to watch, all the books I want to read, all the video games I want to play. There’s just never any room to have “nothing to do,” even in these times of self-quarantine.

3. Apple Products

I know. Don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it. The one and only Apple product that I’ve ever owned (to the best of my recollection) was a 3rd-generation iPod nano. I have many friends who swear by their iPhones and Macbooks and iMessage and iMovie. And that’s fine. All the more power to them. For me, I just can’t justify the premium price.

4. Drake

Whenever Drake comes on the radio, I immediately change the station. Does this make me a bad Canadian? Maybe that’s just God’s plan. Drake is hardly the best I’ve ever had in terms of hip hop generally and Canadian hip hop in particular. Sorry about that, eh?

5. Pinterest

I mean, I guess I get it. Pinterest can be good for inspiration boards. I even have an account on there. But, maybe I’m just the wrong demographic, because I’m clearly very much into social media in general. Or perhaps I’d just end up with a bunch of Pinterest fails if I tried. Now there’s a board idea!

6. Fashion Sense

If my standard uniform of geeky t-shirts, zip-up hoodies and dad shoes wasn’t already a dead giveaway, I’m not exactly one for high fashion. Maybe it’s from all these years of working from home and gaining too much of a comfort level in comfortable clothes and less of a focus on looking presentable. Or maybe it’s because I value this level of comfort that I’ve never really pursued a career outside the home. Some people really like nice clothes and shoes and all that. It’s just not me.

7. Alternative Milks

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve never liked the taste (or smell) of soy milk. Many Asians are lactose intolerant, so soy milk has always been around. I just can’t stand it. More recently, we’ve seen a number of other “alternative” milks for people who either can’t drink or don’t want to drink cow’s milk. From coconut to cashew, almond to oat milk, I’m just not a fan. None of them “taste right” to me, even when I only use a splash in my morning coffee.

8. Watching TV in Bed

On some level, I understand the appeal. On another level, I can never find a comfortable position to watch TV in bed. I’ve tried watching on tablets and laptops — we don’t have an actual television in our bedroom — and I just can’t do it. Not to mention that it’s probably bad for sleep quality too. Despite the flexibility of working from home, I’m all for more defined boundaries. TV belongs in the living room for me.

9. Celery

Broadly speaking, I don’t think I’m a picky eater. Whenever those lists show on social media asking what foods you wouldn’t eat, I usually end up with zero. Of course, I still have my food preferences. Given the option, I probably wouldn’t order the eggplant… but eggplant isn’t one of those “everybody likes it” kind of foods. Celery, on the other hand, seems pretty innocuous to most. When I see on a veggie platter, I just go for the carrot sticks. I don’t like raw broccoli or cauliflower either (cooked is fine).

10. Panic-Hoarding Toilet Paper

Well, that’s pretty self-explanatory. We’ve got a healthy supply here, thank you very much.

How about you? What’s your take on the unpopular opinion game? What are some things you don’t like that everyone else seems to like?
