(This post is brought to you by Book Outlet.)

Reading is fundamental, and a love of books starts well before kids even learn their ABC’s. Once established, this love of reading continues throughout childhood, into the teenage years and persists long into adulthood. It’s not long before a love of simple children’s books, like Brown Bear, Brown Bear, evolves into a devotion to more challenging reads, like the Harry Potter series.

The Joy of Reading

Back to school is right around the corner, and that’s why I’m so glad to be partnering with Book Outlet today. As school-aged children will soon be inundated with textbooks and homework, this is a crucial time to reinforce a love of reading. Great books remind us that leisure reading is not only enjoyable, but richly rewarding, too.

My daughter will be entering kindergarten in September and surely, she’ll have a lot to learn. I want to do everything that I can to make sure that she’ll still enthusiastically grab one of her favourite books and ask that I read it with her. after she gets home from school.

Speaking for myself, I was a huge fan of the Choose Your Own Adventure series as a kid. I later turned my attention to Charlotte’s Web, and around the age of 11 or 12, I dove into almost everything by Michael Crichton. (Jurassic Park changed my life.)

These days, I endeavor to read at least two books a month.

Recommended Reading: Children’s Books

To give you a sense of the kind of savings you can expect at Book Outlet, here are several children’s books that our family has personally enjoyed:

  • Press Here by Herve Tullet ($11.49, list price $21.13): This cute and colourful book comes with a fun interactive element.
  • The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka ($4.39, list price $10.99): Care to hear this classic tale from the wolf’s perspective? It’s all one big misunderstanding.
  • Little Bear by Else Holmelund Minarik ($3.69, list price $4.99): All the little bear wants is to play outside, but it’s much too cold. What can he do?
  • Daniel Tiger’s 5-Minute Stories ($7.99, list price $17.99): This book includes twelve Daniel Tiger stories that can each be read aloud in five minutes.
  • Brain Quest Pre-School ($8.69, list price $15.79): This isn’t technically a book, but it is a creative way to make flash cards fun. The Brain Quest series has different versions available for practically every grade level.
  • The BFG by Roald Dahl ($7.29, list price $12.99): This beloved classic reminds us that we can’t assume something about someone just because of the way they look. As heroine Sophie discovers, not all giants like to “guzzle and swallomp nice little chiddlers.”
  • Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White ($5.19, list price $9.99): Of all the children’s books I’ve ever read, I think this one has to be my favourite, hands-down. A humble tale that’s truly radiant, indeed.
  • Pete’s Big Lunch by James Dean ($3.69, list price $5.27): The Pete the Cat series has a very distinct art style and it’s strangely relatable. As a foodie family, we particularly enjoyed this story about a massive sandwich.
  • Moana and Pua by Melissa Lagonegro ($3.69, list price $7.99): Part of the Step into Reading series (level 2), this book uses simple vocabulary and short sentences for early readers. It has a cute little piggy in it, too.
  • Rosie Goes to Preschool by Karen Katz ($8.69, list price $26.43): This book was a great way to prepare our little one for her first day of preschool: setting up expectations and getting her excited to learn and meet new friends.

Prices listed above are thought to be accurate as of this writing. But, of course, check the Book Outlet website for the latest pricing information.
