Happy BC Day

Depending on where you are in the country, today is being celebrated as a number of different occasions. The people of Alberta have Heritage Day, New Brunswick has New Brunswick Day, Nova Scotia has Natal Day and Manitoba has Terry Fox Day. Here in British Columbia, we’ve got B.C. Day. I’ve shared some fun facts about B.C. in previous years. Today, we’ll take a look at some famous British Columbians from the entertainment industry.

It probably won’t surprise too many readers that most of these celebs hail from the Metro Vancouver area, though there are a couple of Island representatives too!

Bryan Adams: While born in Kingston, Ontario, this singer-songwriter started his professional career in the Vancouver studio scene. Everything he does, he does it for you, running to you in the summer of ’69.

Shawn Ashmore: Best known for playing “Iceman” Bobby Drake in the X-Men movies, Shawn (and his twin brother Aaron) were born in the Vancouver suburb of Richmond in 1979.

Michael Buble: This soulful crooner was born in Burnaby, BC and has gone on to win four Grammy Awards. Some have said he’s the modern equivalent of Frank Sinatra.

David Foster: Hailing from Victoria on Vancouver Island, Foster is the famed record producer working with such notables as Christina Aguilera, Toni Braxton, Natalie Cole, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Kenny Rogers, Madonna, and Barbra Streisand.

Nelly Furtado: I’m like a bird, I’ll only fly away… this Canadian singer-songwriter was born in Victoria, going on to bust out hit tracks like “Maneater” and “Promiscuous.”

Carly Rae Jepsen: While she did appear in Canadian Idol back in 2007, Mission native Carly Rae Jepsen didn’t burst onto the pop music scene until 2011 when she released her hit single “Call me Maybe.”

Eric McCormack: Hey look! It’s Will from the 90s TV sitcom Will and Grace. Even though McCormack was born in Toronto, he currently splits his time between Los Angeles and Vancouver.

Carrie-Anne Moss: Most of us probably know this soon-to-be 49-year-old actress for playing Trinity in The Matrix movies. More recently, the Burnaby original has been keeping up her geek cred by playing Jeri Hogarth on the Netflix series Jessica Jones.

Ryan Reynolds: Who can forget this lovable Vancouverite? In addition to playing two drastically different versions of the character Deadpool, Reynolds has also starred in Blade: Trinity, Green Lantern, and Van Wilder. We can’t forget about Van Wilder.

Cobie Smulders: Most of us knew her as Robin Scherbatsky from How I Met Your Mother before she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Maria Hill. Born in Vancouver, her full name is actually Jacoba Francisca Maria Smulders.

How many of these famous British Columbians do you think still live somewhere in B.C.? No cheating!
