What's Up Wednesdays: Into the Kitchen

It’s time for our weekly speedlink here on Beyond the Rhetoric. Today, we indulge in some culinary adventures, both in the kitchen and beyond. Kicking things off, Tim from SuperFitDads wants to make it really easy for guys that can’t cook. He has a simple recipe for bolognese sauce that just about anyone can make. This has less to do with being a competent dad and more to do with knowing your way around the kitchen.

Speaking of simple recipes, Salma Dinani has compiled an extensive list of clean eating recipes for just about every meal of the day. Whether you want to start your day with an oatmeal muffin and a date smoothie or you want to wolf down some curried quinoa for lunch, these recipes show that healthy meals don’t have to be boring. Yes, homemade fries also make the cut.

Of course, we all deserve a treat every now and then. It’s just sometimes things don’t quite work out as planned. Jen Yates shares a series of images of Thanksgiving cakes gone horribly wrong. Let’s just say the gobble-gobble bird in the middle looks a little too much like what happens after you eat the cake rather than what it should look like before it goes in your mouth.

Heading outside for some real meat, Stacey Robinsmith gives us a quick inside look at the newly opened Meat Craft Urban Butchery. At the grand opening event over the weekend, they roasted up a whole pig and provided attendees with some amazing pulled pork sandwiches. They dressed up the meat with some coleslaw and a House of Q barbecue sauce. Oh and some extra bourbon too. Because that’s how they roll.

And finally, we venture beyond the kitchen and beyond the city with James Headrick in search of some wild golden mushrooms. Most of us pick up our produce from the grocery store, but if you know where to look, you can pick out some tremendous gems right from Mother Nature. In this case, you can find the golden Chanterelle in many parts of Vancouver Island. Just make sure you identify the mushrooms that are safe to eat first!
