Supernatural stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles as brothers Sam and Dean Winchester. The series follows the brothers as they hunt demons, ghosts, monsters and other figures of the supernatural. The first episode of the series sets the tone: dark yet kitschy. One of my favourite actors, Jeffery Dean Morgan, plays the father figure in this show, so I was automatically hooked from the start. The addition of Buffy alums Julie Benz (Darla) and Amber Benson (Tara) as guest stars in random episodes sweetened the pot for me. Apparently, Patrick Dempsey from Grey’s Anatomy is also a guest on the show!
Now in its 9th season (I’m actually only up to season 2 so please – no spoilers!!), I find it pretty incredible that a show like Supernatural could make Vancouver not look like Vancouver. There are a few sites out there that already track this show’s filming locations, such as this one and this one, or even this incredibly well plotted out Google map, so here’s a quick view of Vancouver in Supernatural.
2400 Kingsway. This was the site of a motel that Sam and Dean stayed at. I don’t think this site exists anymore – I think there’s actually a condo development that’s going up right here. It was the strangest looking motel sitting on Kingsway that I’ve ever seen.
St. Andrew Wesley Church on Burrard. I recognized this church almost immediately because it’s right downtown.. and I pass it on the bus nearly every day into work.
Ladner United Church. At first, when I saw this, I thought it was the Minoru church in Richmond, by Gateway Theatre. It didn’t add up, though, because of the building to the right of the church. There’s no such building like that at the church in Richmond!
Anyhow, visit this comprehensive map for all the filming locations – ever – in Supernatural history for your browsing pleasure!
