In Vancouver, there are many ways you can mark the unofficial start of summer. Maybe it’s the first time you enjoy a meal out on the patio. Maybe it’s the first time you head to the beach or the first time you enjoy a backyard barbecue. In Burnaby Heights, you know summer has arrived when everyone flocks to Hastings Street for Hats Off Day.
Taking place on the first Saturday of every June, Hats Off Day is a full-on street festival where merchants “take their hats off” and celebrate everything that his neighborhood has to offer. There are all sorts of Hats Off Day specials, like the Portuguese sardines and a bun from Fortuna Bakery and the meatball sliders from Cioffi’s Meat Market. You’ve got live music and dunk tanks too.
Just as I did with last year’s event, I shot a quick video highlighting some of the festivities from Hats Off Day 2015. However, there are at least a couple of reasons why this year’s event is particularly special for me. First, this was the first time I actually got up to Hasting Street early enough to catch the parade, waving hello to Elvis (above) and Marilyn Monroe. Second, this was the first street festival and the first parade for Adalynn too. She had a great time with the free balloon animals and foam hats.
The first video was created with the “Auto Awesome” feature in the new Google Photos and the second video gives you a glimpse into the crepe-making process at Chez Meme Baguette Bistro. I’m sure next year’s event will be that much bigger and better!
