With all those crazy drivers on the roads these days doing all sorts of crazy (and dangerous) things, it can oftentimes be in your own best interest to capture those moments on video. This is true for unfortunate incidents involving others, as well as well you find yourself in a fender-bender. That’s why dashcams are increasing in popularity and that’s why the ultra-widescreen feature of the PAPAGO! GoSafe 520 is particularly notable.
I’ve taken a look at a couple of other dashcams from PAPAGO! this year. The P3 Driving Recorder is one of their higher-end models, boasting all sorts of additional safety features and GPS maps, while the GoSafe 260 Rearview Mirror Dashcam has the convenience of taking over your rearview mirror. What sets the GoSafe 520 apart is that it is able to record video in a 21:9 aspect ratio at a 2K resolution.
Having that super wide field of view and the 2560 x 1080 pixel resolution means that you are better able to capture what is happening in the periphery, as well as what’s going on right in front of the car. If there’s a car running through a stop sign on the side street, for instance, you have a better chance of capturing that on video than if you were recording at a regular 16:9 aspect ratio instead.
Today’s post is meant to be just a short introduction to this product and the full review will be published on MEGATechNews early in the new year. You can find the GoSafe 520 on Amazon for about $200. Embedded below are the unboxing video and a sample video that I shot at night to test its low-light, high-glare visibility. I’ll follow up with a daytime video soon.
UPDATE (12 Jan 2015): Here is a clearer daytime sample video.
