As we say goodbye to 2013 and welcome 2014 as a new year filled with all sorts of wonderful opportunities and possibilities, I thought I’d take the time to consider what I want to accomplish with my life, not only in the coming year, but also in the many more years (hopefully) to come.
The idea of a “bucket list” oftentimes doesn’t enter the conversation until someone is in his or her later years, but given the relatively short amount of time we have here on Earth, it’s something that is worth considering at any age.
I still have many goals and ambitions ahead of me, but I am grateful that I have already been able to do so much already. Not surprisingly, two of the biggest areas of my life that you’ll find in the bucket list below involve travel and food. And traveling for food. So, in no particular order, here are 23 things that I want to see or do before I die.
Travel Destinations
Since writing my international travel bucket list a few years ago, I’ve been able to knock two out of the five destinations off the list. Of course, the world is such a vast and wonderful place. There’s just so much more to see and experience. This is surely but a very small sample of where I want to go at some point.
- Travel to the pyramids at Giza
- Explore the Galapagos Islands
- Visit every continent on Earth
- Stay in an ice hotel
- Ride a train across Canada
Food Adventures
Vancouver may be quite the multicultural city with plenty of ethnic dining opportunities, but just as the world is vast, so is its menu. I’ve already eaten kangaroo and camel. Not surprisingly, my culinary and gastronomical ambitions are also tied to international travel.
- Eat an insect-based street food
- Eat haggis in Scotland
- Eat balut in the Philippines
- Eat fish and chips in England
Professional Accomplishments
The world of work is about more than just earning a wage and paying the bills. For me, there are few feelings in this world better than the sense of accomplishment. I’m proud to be the co-author of Make Money Online and, more recently, the sole author of Beyond the Margins. And I’m proud that my YouTube channel has seen over a million views in total. Now, it’s time to keep moving upward and onward.
- Publish five self-authored books
- Have a photo purchased and published
- Get one million views on a single YouTube video
- Write an article for a major newspaper or magazine
Personal Goals
Of course, there’s more to life than travel, food and work. There are some personal areas in my life that deserve my attention too.
- Own a rental property
- Learn another language
- Run a full marathon
- Win a video game tournament
Adventures and Experiences
And finally, we’ve got something of a random grab bag of other things I want to see and do. Some of these could have arguably been included in one of the other categories, I suppose, but they’re all adventures I want to experience. One of my life regrets is never having attended The Price Is Right while Bob Barker was still hosting it.
- Go dog-sledding
- Attend a live taping of The Colbert Report
- Fire a crossbow
- Go skydiving
- See the Northern Lights
- Experience a full Super Bowl weekend
What’s on Your Bucket List?
Without a doubt, I could have added dozens, if not hundreds of more items to this bucket list. Life’s short and we should all endeavor to extract everything we can out of the time that we have, both for ourselves and for our loved ones. What about you? Where do you want to go? What do you want to do? What is the single greatest experience that you want to have?
That is a lot of things Michael. I only have a few like:
* Visit my hometown with my children
* Visit Pearl Harbor (I was born on Dec. 7th)
* Visit Michael Kwan and Stephen Fung in Vancouver
* Go to a Dot Com Pho
* Visit Switzerland
* Get my BS degree
* Live long enough to see grandchildren
