How big is too big? My first Android smartphone had a 4-inch display. The following generation of phones had 4.3-inch screens, then 4.7-inch screens and the current crop of flagships have 5-inch screens. There is a class of “phablets” like the Galaxy Note 3 that are even larger, but none are quite as large as the Sony Xperia Z Ultra and its massive 6.4-inch 1080p display. So again, I have to ask you, how big is too big?
You might remember when I unboxed the Sony SmartWatch 2 SW2 earlier this month. That review is now live, but now I’ve posted another unboxing video up on YouTube for your viewing pleasure. The smartwatch has just a 1.6-inch display, so the Xperia Z Ultra is quite the different beast altogether. That said, it is really thin and, based on my first few days using it, the Xperia Z Ultra is a pretty great device too.
It boasts just about all the cutting edge features that you’d want out of a modern day smartphone, but the reaction from just about everyone is the same: The size of the Sony Xperia Z Ultra is overkill and it’s not really practical as a phone. When asked whether it can fit in a pocket, I tell people it depends on the size of the pocket.
Interestingly enough, I brought this phone to a family gathering over the weekend and let my little cousins play Plants vs. Zombies 2 on it. They’re used to playing on an older iPhone, so this was quite the quantum leap… and they loved it. They said it’s so much easier playing games on a bigger screen. Then again, my cousins don’t make too many phone calls either.
The unboxing video for the Xperia Z Ultra is embedded below and the full written review will be published on MEGATechNews.com shortly.
