Continuing on the sci-fi trend, I’ve gotta say that Fringe is one of my favourite science fiction TV shows on air right now. They’ve taken this show to many different places and while the first season wasn’t filmed in Vancouver, seasons 2 through 5 were.
Fringe follows FBI agent Olivia Dunham (portrayed by Anna Torv), Peter Bishop (local Vancouverite Josh Jackson) and Walter Bishop (John Noble), who are members of a Federal Bureau of Investigation “Fringe Division” team based in Boston, Massachusetts. The team uses “fringe” science and FBI investigative techniques to investigate a series of unexplained, often ghastly occurrences, which are related to mysteries surrounding a parallel universe. Call them what you want – I still call them The Scoobies (you Buffy fans will know what I’m talking about!). I like to think that this show has the feel of an updated version of the X-Files (also filmed in Vancouver!) with elements from War of the Worlds.
The production has been filming all over Vancouver, but the most prominent shot is probably this one below:
Come on, guys – it’s clearly the Vancouver Public Library downtown! That’s not the New York Fringe division. We’re totally on to you.
Yep, that’s really Boston. They do actually use the inside of The Orpheum Theatre as part of the storyline. It’s quite interesting, I promise.
If you squint, you can see the National Ave road sign hanging by the stoplight. This was on Main street, facing south. Hey look, Josh Jackson’s in this shot!
While Vancouver is Josh Jackson’s native stomping grounds, John Noble seems to like it so much here that he owns a home out by English Bay – or so my sources tell me. Fringe returns for its fifth and final season tonight, Friday September 28 at 9pm on Fox.
I am pumped for the premiere tonight. I’ve been a fan since the beginning, and 5 seasons are the perfect length to not water the show down. A friend that I work with at DISH who is also a fan used to live near Vancouver, and she points out the real locations all the time. I wonder how many tricks Abrams will have up his sleeve for the show to come to an end. If it gets too confusing, I’ll have to watch the episodes over and over on my Hopper DVR. It has plenty of memory, and it’s the perfect fit for a TV addict like me. Here’s to a great fall lineup!
I want my root beer float!
Fringe is certainly one of the more unique shows in television history. I enjoy the fact that I never know what to expect from the talented writers that make this show possible. I wish Rod Serling was still alive, as I am positive he wouldn’t miss an episode. There is nothing else like it; entertainment at it’s finest!
Fringe is actually being filmed at the Olympic Village right now – I was really close to the set! If you’re in Vancouver and want to visit the Fringe sets, just look for the pink arrow with the word “Belly” on it. It’s a dead giveaway!
I’ve followed the series from season 1-3 but has somehow lost myself in between the two worlds in season 4.
It must be pretty cool to see places in your own backyard appearing in set locations of International renowned shows.
Why is Vancouver such a popular location for Sci-fi TV shows?
We have a strong movie/TV infrastructure here, plus certain tax credits. Many movies that “take place” in Seattle are shot in Vancouver.
Nice photos! I didn’t watch this movie but surely I will watch it soon.
