Every week, I have a post called What’s Up Wednesdays where I share some of the blog posts that I am reading on the Internet. Sometimes, I’ll take on a theme like working from home or Barack Obama’s inauguration, but other times, I’ll just go with an eclectic mix of posts that caught my eye. Today, I’m opting for the second strategy.
If you want to be featured in a future edition of What’s Up Wednesdays, be sure to follow me on Twitter and let me know about your best blog post by Tuesday evening.
Partying in Taiwan with a Tattooed Pilot
I hadn’t heard from Dot Com Pho regular Leo Chiang for quite a while, so it was with a little sigh of relief that I hear that the “tattooed pilot from Battlestar Galactica” He celebrated his birthday in Taiwan, surrounding himself with women and alcohol. He hopes to share a few more of his Taiwan adventures before coming back home again.

Staying in the Same School for a Decade or More
It’s hard to believe that it has been over three years since I graduated from university, since I still consider myself to be somewhat of an academic. Hummingbird604 (Raul) brings up a question that I asked myself while still in school: Should you switch schools between your undergrad and PhD. I’ve always been told that you should should go to different institutions for your bachelor’s and your master’s, because it gives you a better breadth of experience. That’s valuable in academia.
Searching the Closet for Retro Geek Chic
We love our gadgets, but have you ever looked in your closet to see what technology you were using five, ten, or even more years ago? Miss604 (Rebecca Bollwitt) did and she’s discovered some crazy blasts from the past. Does anyone still use Zip disks? Do you remember mixtapes? It’s amazing how far technology has advanced in the last decade or so.
Giving Birth to Twitter with 140 Characters
It’s not quite mainstream just yet, but Twitter is quickly increasing in popularity. Have you ever wondered how the microblogging platform got its start? 140Characters.com offers an insightful glance into how Twitter was born. Perhaps one of most “substantiative” tweets early on? “Oh this is going to be addictive.” Yes, yes it is.
I would love to read on Barack Obama’s foreign policy.
Seriously? It would put you to sleep, just like every other leader’s foreign policy. But I think the Huffington Post dissected it a few weeks ago in bullet form.
See Chris, that is where different people like different things. I would get into reading about our foreign policy and other decision making policies that our leaders have. I also like reading about other nations, as it is always good to know everything you can about friends and enemies. As was said in the Godfather:
“Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.”
Perhaps. Don’t get me wrong, I take an interest in my country’s events and what’s going on, but sometimes it can get very dull and completely loses my interest after a while.
The fact that Twitter is not quite mainstream yet and the way it has exploded in popularity in such a short time makes it even more powerful, isn’t it?
The local press published this Tweerific news.
What is your definition of mainstream? Being on CNN and other news media now would seem to me as mainstream.
Maybe mainstream should include schools who tweet when there’s an emergency or school closure. lol
With the way things are going, I’m sure that’s not too far off.
I had no idea Twitter was three years old, but maybe that’s because I kept shutting it out and ignoring it for better things at the time, like MySpace or hi5 (remember hi5?) lol.
Interestingly enough we saw Leo on Dot Com Pho today! Blackberries rule BTW.
I still have yet to get either a Blackberry or an iPhone. The data plans in Canada aren’t very attractive and are very overpriced compared to those in the U.S.
I can understand. I have an unlimited data plan for $30 a month.
There’s no such thing as unlimited plans in Canada, which is very disappointing. The cheapest plan for the iPhone is $60/month, and an extra $15 for caller ID, voice mail, and text messaging. You also have to spend $199 for the phone as well and sign a 3 year contract. Major rip off!
I just caught the question about ZIP drives. I fixed a computer yesterday (Friday) that the client had a ZIP drive hooked up as the backup for the whole computer. She had to insert 10 ZIP disks to complete the backup.
I converted her to a 1TB drive for $169 and a $20 profit for myself plus the $100 for the setup and initial backup.
I had no idea people still used ZIP drives. Between USB flash drives and external HDDs, ZIP is dying off quickly.
I have clients that are still using Win95 and dial up.

And this Top Thinker contest isn’t?
