As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, a lot of people spend their summers hanging out on patios and relaxing at the beach. Others may be more inclined to watch movie blockbusters with plenty of special effects and action. And then there are the geeks in the audience.
The definition of what it means to be a “geek” has certainly changed in the last few years. It is no longer necessarily true that a geek will have thick-rimmed glasses, a pocket protector, and pants that are held up with colorful suspenders. Geeks are no longer shunned in society, because it has almost become the norm to be a geek of some kind. You could be a gadget geek or a computer geek, but there are music geeks and even car geeks too.
With that in mind, how would a geek decided to spend a glorious sunny Sunday afternoon? Would they partake in beach volleyball? Chill out in the backyard with some burgers on the barbecue? Let’s have a look at five things geeks can do to fill their sun-filled summers.
1. Camp Outside a Retail Store
You’ve surely heard about the iPhone 3G debacle on Friday morning. Geeks lined up in droves in front of Rogers stores (for Canadians) and Apple/AT&T stores (for Americans), so that they could get their hands on the latest hotness from Steve Jobs. You can meet some rather interesting people with these overnight camping events, even if Rogers only provides one granola bar to every three attendees. Just because July 11th has come and gone doesn’t mean that the lineups will end. The iPhone 3G is sold out pretty much everywhere, so it’s the “Where can I get a Wii?” phenomenon all over again…
2. Hit on Girls While Riding a Scooter
As much gas (and money) as it might save him, I think we’d all agree that Stephen Fung looks pretty dorky rolling around in his Yamaha scooter. To make matters even better (worse?), the 49cc wonder even has its own Twitter account. I can’t imagine you’d be very effective at picking up girls on a scooter, but it doesn’t mean you can’t try. You may be better off flirting from a mountain bike with a laptop on the handlebars. I found it, man!
3. Participate in Local Guitar Hero Competitions
You may not be able to play a real instrument, but you can still earn the respect and adulation of your fellow geeks. Be a “real” rock star on a pint-sized axe by winning a local Guitar Hero competition. If you practice hard enough, you just might be able to beat this kid.
4. Get into a Random Heated Star Trek Debate
Show off your true geekdom by getting into a heated argument with another geek over the most minute of details. It could be related to Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, or Star Trek, the last of which actually became a topic of conversation at Dot Com Pink Pearl. I can’t believe those Trekkies spend so much time arguing over how the Star Trek prequel would work involving a young Kirk, Sulu, and Spock.
5. Blog About Geeky Things to Do in the Summer (or Whatever)
Sigh. Instead of being out there playing tennis and enjoying the sunshine, here I am telling you guys how geeks spend their sunny Sundays. I’m not the only one. Fellow blogger Rebecca Bollwitt tells you what to do on the weekends too… though her options are just a little less geeky.
We just spent the afternoon on the balcony geeking out with our MacBooks then got a pop-in visit from Duane Storey who sat there with his iPhone. Even geeks need downtime… geeky downtime.
And here I sit reading your blog.
Geeks of the world unite! Rebecca was around to comment too. 🙂
Geeky things on a sunny Sunday? How about staying indoors trying to write a WordPress plugin? Certainly that counts as geeky!
Except, of course, I failed, which I think disqualifies the otherwise geeky status of the afternoon.
At $10 bucks a month on gas vs $200+, I will gladly endure the ridicule. Besides, in Vancouver traffic, scooter pwns!
Met some cool people while waiting in line, even though I came home iPhone 3g-less. BUT…I have one now…YAY
I slept and wrote a bit.
As much of a geek as I am, I try to get out and do non-technology related stuff and enjoy the outdoors when the weather is nice!
