The sun was shining. The mercury was rising. And the crowds came out in droves to indulge in hot Italian sausage and extra cold ice cream. Hats Off Day is an annual tradition in Burnaby Heights, offering an opportunity for local merchants to “tip their hats” to the community with live entertainment, food specials, and fun arts and crafts projects for the kids. Plus, there’s a parade!
I’ve been going to Hats Off Day for several years now, ever since I moved into this part of town really. When the weather’s nice, it’s an excellent street party filled with happy faces. It’s even more special now that we’ve got a toddler in tow.
We made our way up to Hastings Street extra early this year so that we could enjoy the $2 pancake breakfast before finding a spot to watch the hour-long parade. Participants in the parade range from local law enforcement to local kids clubs teaching dance and martial arts. It’s fun for the whole family and I look forward to it every summer.
