What's Up Wednesdays: I'm a Geek

It’s true that Instagram is filled with #foodporn and selfies. It’s also true that you can find a pretty diverse group of people on the photo-centric social network, as Zach Rosenberg has unearthed some very geeky dads on Instagram who you should follow. James Estrada (@nerdyathomedad) is probably one of the best, featuring pictures of his son in an epic Rocket Raccoon cosplay getting plenty of attention at conventions and among mainstream media.

If you prefer to get geeky with your food, then you’re in luck too. Local gastronomes Dennis and May Pang had the opportunity to indulge in the 9th Annual Spot Prawn Festival down by Granville Island. This is easily one of the most anticipated times of the year for Vancouver foodies and you’ll find them flocking to Fisherman’s Wharf along False Creek for the next several weeks to load up on the little delicious crustaceans.

The freelance life is just as much a lifestyle choice as it is a career choice. And you need to approach this lifestyle with the right mindset, as Jennifer Lawler says serious freelance writers should never say they are simply “cranking it out.” This implies that your writing is just a commodity when it’s so much more than that. There is value in writing more quickly, to be sure, but don’t just “grind it out” to earn your way.

Continuing on the topic of earning a living, Tyler Cruz asserts that he doesn’t like to save money; he’d rather make money. My opinion is that the two need to work together for maximum benefit. It boils down to opportunity cost. Why waste hours shopping around and driving across town to save a few dollars when you could spend those same hours earning more money through side gigs and alternative income sources?

And finally, we close on a particularly geeky note with The Geeky Nimrod. It’s not enough to have a computer that eschews Windows and Mac OS in favor of Linux; you have to engage in a number of fun Linux secrets to brighten your tech-infused day. Do you know about these Easter eggs? Using Figlet to create ASCII text art is pretty awesome.
