Main Street Honey Shoppe by Ed Lau

Let’s dive right in with some blog posts that caught my eye this week.

We get started with “Follow Me Foodie” Mijune Pak as she provides some guidance as to the etiquette of Dine Out Vancouver. The annual food festival allows patrons to try out a number of different restaurants with more affordable prix fixe menus. One of my favorites last year was Le Parisien and I’m heading out for four Dine Out adventures this year. I’ll likely have camera in tow too.

Sticking with the theme of food, we have Ed Lau, who recently paid a visit to Main Street Honey Shoppe, across the street from the usual Happy Pho location where we typically host Dot Com Pho. Even if you don’t understand it, many of us have come to appreciate some of the subtle nuances of wine. In more recent years, we’ve seen shops catering to chocolate lovers, coffee fanatics and tea enthusiasts too. The Honey Shoppe follows in this same kind of trend with all sorts of different honeys and honey-related products.

Many people see their jobs as a means to an end and that’s a topic that Trent Hamm discusses in one of his more recent posts on The Simple Dollar. So many people are simply working for the weekend, dreading the eight (or more) hours they spend five (or more) times a week at the job that they hate. This isn’t the way we should lead our lives. Instead, we should work toward all sorts of other freedoms: professional freedom, time freedom, and freedom “from stuff.”

Answering his own questions since 2001, Darren Barefoot explores the future of empathy as depicted in the movie Her. Even though we live in an increasingly detached and emotionless society filled with technology replacing many human roles, we also find that many people are even more empathetic than ever before. What’s almost strange is that, based on the trailers, we think protagonist Theodore is single and that’s why he connects with the OS voiced by Scarlett Johansson. He’s actually married.

Finally, we have Jeff Cutler who was also in attendance at the International CES 2014. He shot several videos at the show, including an interview he conducted with Chris Weber from Nokia. If you’re interested in smartphones and tablets, particularly when it comes to Nokia and Windows Phone, then you should check that out. Unsurprisingly, they’re moving toward bigger screens too. What are your thoughts on the phablet craze?
