frank sinatra, days of wine and roses,

“People often remark that I’m pretty lucky. Luck is only important in so far as getting the chance to sell yourself at the right moment. After that, you’ve got to have talent and know how to use it.”

When it comes to the world of entertainment, few men have achieved the same kind of broad sweeping success as one Francis Albert Sinatra. The man also known as the Voice is understandably best remembered for his singing prowess. Frank Sinatra was the premier crooner of his day, belting out such legendary hits as “Moon River” and “Strangers in the Night.” He also enjoyed a very successful acting career, while also working as a producer, director and conductor.

You could say that he was quite the lucky man, but luck was only a small part of his success.

You’re lucky if you win the lottery, but you’re not lucky when you’re able to achieve decade after decade of monumental success. Yes, there’s something to be said about being in the right place at the right time, but you can’t demonstrate the right skills and talents when the opportunity arises, then all that luck will be for nothing. I’ve written on the subject of good luck in the past and this quote from Ol’ Blue Eyes echoes that sentiment.

Fortune favors the bold, but she also favors those who work for chances at a big break. And when opportunity does present itself, you have to be both willing and able to take advantage of it. Many of the world’s most successful entertainers feel much the same way. Patrick Stewart may have been “lucky” to be cast as Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Charles Xavier, but he also worked very hard at his craft for many years. There’s a reason why he is such an accomplished actor on the silver screen, on the small screen and on stage.

“I’ve lived a life that’s full. I’ve traveled each and every highway. And more, much more than this, I did it my way.”

Don’t rely on Lady Luck, but be grateful when she meets you. Plan each charted course, see everything through without exemption, love, laugh, cry and face it all as you stand tall, doing it your way.
