Charlie and Cheerios

Every Wednesday, I link out to some interesting blog posts that I found around the Internet. Here is this week’s collection.

We start off with Buzz Bishop who is now the proud father of a cereal box baby. That’s because his son Charlie is now featured on every Cheerios box in Canada. He entered a contest a couple years ago and Charlie’s photo was already used as part of an online campaign earlier this year. Even though they didn’t get any sort of real compensation for the use of Charlie’s photo aside from some free cereal, Buzz is happily bragging about this achievement.

There are few things in this world as satisfying as a great plate of pasta, but all those carbs can be detrimental to your overall wellness goals. Offering us an alternative is Phoenix Lam and her zucchini “pasta” recipe. As you can imagine, the noodles have been replaced with shoestring-cut zucchini. It’s not quite the same, but it’s close enough in a pinch and it could help to satisfy that craving for the “awesome carby goodness of real pasta.”

Getting out of the kitchen, we continue our food journeys with Stacey Robinsmith. He recently went to a new hot lunch place in New Westminster called the Big Star Sandwich Company. As you can imagine, they specialize in sandwiches and the place was “swamped” with people. The humble sandwich may be reasonably simple, but Big Star is one of the very few places on Urbanspoon to (as of this writing) rock a perfect 100% rating. That’s got to mean something.

The NFL season is officially underway and many of us couldn’t be more stoked. While I haven’t really participated in a pool in some time, I totally understand the appeal, but I’ve largely been involved in “fun” pools for free. But what about ones that cost money? Jessica Sommerfield questions whether pay-to-play fantasy football should be illegal under current gambling laws in the United States. Most of us would argue it’s not really a game of chance, but individual state laws can vary widely on the subject.

And finally, we come to a topic that is particular appropriate for a What’s Up Wednesdays speedlink. Adam Grunwerg gives us six reasons why you should link away from your blog. Many site owners are afraid to give away “link juice” for free and are focused much more heavily on link building, but it’s also important to provide useful resources for your readers and to give appropriate credit to external sources when credit is due.
