Sunday Snippet: Og Mandino (1923 - 1996)

“Never again clutter your days or nights with so many menial and unimportant things that you have no time to accept a real challenge when it comes along. This applies to play as well as work. A day merely survived is no cause for celebration. You are not here to fritter away your precious hours when you have the ability to accomplish so much by making a slight change in your routine. No more busy work. No more hiding from success. Leave time, leave space, to grow. Now. Now! Not tomorrow!”

We fill our lives with a lot of things that really don’t matter. We only have so much space in our brains and somehow we choose to fill it with frivolous thoughts and meaningless distractions. This is a part of the constantly distracted modern lifestyle, but it doesn’t have to be that way. If we clear out some of that clutter, we might actually get something meaningful done.

Best known for authoring The Greatest Salesman in the World and later The Greatest Secret in the World, Augustine “Og” Mandino II encouraged us to replace our bad habits and take action now. Don’t leave for tomorrow what you can do today and the thing that you should do today is something that should matter.

Of course, life being what it is, we do have to spend some time on administrative and logistical duties. Food has to be fed and bills have to be paid, but it’s important that you prevent these “menial things” from taking up too much of your time. Remember, it is only the things that you accomplish that will stand the test of time. If all you have is an idea of what you might do or what could be, it will stay as nothing more than that: an idea. You have to take action. You have to allow your ideas to take shape and you have to manifest them into the real world.

You want to be effective and not just efficient. You can be very efficient with sorting through all those TPS reports, but are you really being effective? Are you really getting anything done of any kind of real importance or impact? Are you passing up on grand opportunities, simply because you say you just don’t the time to pursue them?

Don’t just survive the day; seize it.
