Sunday Snippet: Love and Marriage

“Love at first sight is easy to understand; it’s when two people have been looking at each other for a lifetime that it becomes a miracle.”

The quote above comes from Sam Levenson, a humorist and TV host from the middle part of the 20th century. I think that concept is absolutely spot on. Love at first sight is too simplistic a viewpoint. Love is so much more complex than that, especially when you love that person for the rest of your life.

As you may recall, I proposed to my high school sweetheart several months ago. And on Saturday, we went ahead, walked down the aisle, and made it all official. Yes, I am a married man and I couldn’t be happier for it. Belated cash gifts via PayPal will be gladly accepted. But I digress.

“A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.” – Mignon McLaughlin

Certainly, initial attraction is important, but it is not enough to sustain a relationship over the long haul. The road is rocky and you’ll hit a few obstacles, but will you stick with it? Will you continue to fall in love with the same person over and over again?

Even in a dysfunctional relationship like that of Al and Peggy Bundy, they somehow managed to stay together. That says something. I hope I’m not at the Bundy level of dysfunction, but I do look forward to at least that level of lifelong dedication.

“Happy marriages begin when we marry the ones we love, and they blossom when we love the ones we marry.” – Tom Mullen

Here’s to the next phase in my life!
