Star Trek (2009)

“Space, the final frontier.”

That is the tag line for the Star Trek I grew up with. James T. Kirk, Spock, Bones, Uhura and the gang were my friends in the 60s. The new group of the Enterprise could be called “Space, the New Frontier.” This movie goes where no one has gone before in any version or recreation of the original series or movies.

From the beginning, this movie takes the Star Trek franchise to a new generation of viewers, while bringing the old fans along for the trip. If you are a purist expecting a prequel to the old Kirk and gang, you are going to be disappointed. If you let yourself go in the moment of the movie, you will be thrilled.

I am one of the older generation of Trekkies, but I knew coming in that it was going to be different. If you follow me on Twitter (@rayebersole), you would have read my tweets from the beginning of the movie when I excitedly wrote, “Greatest first 5 minutes of a movie ever. #startrek” If that first five minutes doesn’t get you, then you are dead or in a coma.

Lots of action, a new villan, and a new view on time travel from the original, which is why this Star Trek is the “New Frontier.” Not to give away any of the movie, time travel back into the past in this movie doesn’t fix the future, but creates an alternate time line of the likes of Back to the Future.

Does everything turn out okay? Well, you will have to go see it to find out, but I will tell you that the acting is great, the characters are spot on the originals with great throwback lines that had the theater screaming with laughter. The action is more intense and better than any of the other Trek movies.
