CES 2009: Free Lunch for Press and Bloggers

January 11th, 2009 by Michael Kwan

When I came to the Consumer Electronics Show last year, pretty much everything about the convention was new to me. It was my first real technology trade show, because I’ve only attended the smaller conferences in the past. The scale of this thing is absolutely mind-blowing. This time around, the Consumer Electronics Show isn’t quite as awe-inspiring. I have the “been there, done that” kind of approach to it now.

Last year (and presumably all the years that preceded it), all the registered press and bloggers would receive a free lunch during the convention. You’d hand it your food ticket and proceed to collect your free lunch. The free lunch last year usually consisted of pasta and salad, but it seems that the budget is a little smaller this year. Instead of hot food, we all got a box lunch, almost like what your mom would pack into a brown bag for you. Yeah, it’s not exactly high class fare.

Watch the video below to see what you get. It’s actually quite a complete meal that includes some fresh fruit and a decent sandwich, but it’s not quite as nice as having a hot meal. Then again, you can’t complain about the price. Who said there’s no such thing as a free lunch?

The impact of slowdown can be seen here at CES as well. Thanks that consumer electronic companies have not taken their steps back in displaying some amazing gadgetry with innovations!

    2. That looked like an unballanced diet.

It is the United States, after all. Not to be completely unfair, but American diets are a lot larger compared to Canadian and (especially) European diets. It was too much food for lunch. I just ate the sandwich and the apple, keeping the cookie for later. The chips and potato salad I left in the room in case anyone else wanted it (they ran out).

That does look like a fair amount of food for a quick lunch. If it were me, I would have likely done similar to what you did and ate the sandwich and apple but I would have kept both the cookie and chips for later :)
