Welcome to the wonderful month of October. For our neighbours to the south, it means that they’ll be celebrating Columbus Day while Canadians do the Thanksgiving thing (Americans have to wait until next month for that). It also means that the kids will soon be flooding their local shopping malls in search of the greatest Halloween costume known to man. The kid in all of us can participate as well. Go ahead. Order a Street Fighter costume from eBay.

It’s Wednesday and as is tradition around these parts, this means that I’m going to take you on another tour of the blogosphere. For this edition of What’s Up Wednesdays, we explore our online lives, blog for ourselves, and name an infant whale.

  1. Rebecca from Miss604 tells us about a great contest being held by the Vancouver Aquarium. As you may have heard, the Aquarium recently welcomed a new addition to the family and they need your help. Name the baby beluga and you could win some great prizes. Feel free to derive some inspiration from the baby beluga being in the deep blue sea. You know, swimming so wild and swimming so free. He is a little white whale on the go, after all.

  2. Anna from Clayton Voice is feeling charitable and she encourages you to do the same. Check out her post on Surrey’s First Light the Night Event, an annual event meant to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Support the researchers as they seek out better therapies and cures. The event includes twinkling balloons, great music, smiling faces, and good food.

  3. Kathryn Vercillo of Real Words has managed to do quite well for herself as a professional blogger, but she’s recently found herself reaching for something more. As a result, Kathryn has discovered that blogging for herself, she may make less money, but she’s “more happy.” Personally, I find it easier blogging for others.

  4. Tyler Ingram is really starting to get into photography and he loves sharing his pictures with anyone who wants to see them. Facebook is one such venue, but Tyler has learned that Facebook may own your photos. That’s why I tend to share pictures on my blog or Flickr instead.

  5. Raul from Hummingbird604 feels very strongly about any kind of bullying or bashing, but he is particularly annoyed and frustrated about the recent gay-bashing on Davie Street. In case you’re not familiar, Davie Street is the biggest home to Vancouver’s gay and lesbian community.

If you want to be featured in a future edition of What’s Up Wednesdays, I encourage you to follow me on Twitter. I usually put a call-out for posts a day or two before, so keep an eye out for that. Also, for all the top commentators of September 2008, don’t worry. I haven’t forgotten about you. Inspired by blogging buddy Derek Semmler, I’ve decided to do a monthly recap instead of a post just for the commentators. Watch for that tomorrow.
