My dream job was always to teach college English. That was impossible to find full time without a PhD. So, at 27 I started a program to teach K-12. Now having done that along with blogging and minimal freelance, blogging, and live music performance work, I have found it to be my backbone that allows me to have all my fun. I think security sometimes influences rightly, but not always. As with everything it's a balance. If you have freelance ability and know-how, teaching (or other "working for the man" job) could be a great backbone for you. The more income inlets you have, the better in this economy.

Would I ever want to work for someone else again? The answer is pretty obvious. However, having said that, it's never a good idea to leave all your eggs in one basket. In the event that something happens, my resume isn't too far out of date and I have management experience which is always in short supply.

To stay limber, I often browse for cool jobs, and sometimes apply for them. Doing an interview at least once a year, whether or not you want the job or not, keeps you in the loop. It's nice to know what employers look for these days and doubly nice to know that you still have the skills to seal a deal if you need to.

I think Zig Zigar said "Money isn't everything, but it ranks right up there with oxygen."
Better pay, regular pay, paid vacations, and insurance are often the promise of a regular job. I think it is easier in the short run to get better pay working for someone else. In the long run, working for yourself is the only way to really get paid what you want to be worth (if it is a lot).
