I received the email from Google too but this “retirement” has minimal to no effect on me as I never had much luck referring people to the Google AdSense.

I think this is mostly in regards to the AdSense Affiliate ads (look like AdSense but you get paid when product is bought not by the click).
Google is finishing up the merge with DoubleClick’s affiliate system (the new Google Affiliate system) and that will be the system using cost per action with AdSense only being the more traditional AdSense type ads.
At least that was my take on it.

I only use the ads. I woner if I would have made much off the referrals since I barely make cents a day on ads.

On another front, congrats for winning first place in the writing contest and a 3 month banner ad on my blog free of charge! Your post was helpful and very inspirational to me. I know it will touch others the same way. If you’d be so kind to fwd me a 125×125 suitable for a button, we’ll get you rolling!

Hmmm, I didn’t receive the email yet. Anyway, I don’t think the average “Joe Blogger” is really going to be affected by this. The only ones who really make anything of things like that are people like John Chow and Shoemoney because newbie bloggers sign up with them either because it’s the only blog they know or because they think it may get them some attention. I know that even when I was running referral links pretty heavily that I didn’t get any sign-ups.
