Welcome to another hump-day edition of What’s Up Wednesdays, a weekly tradition where I round up some of the best blog posts from the past week. Today, we take a look at everything from the NHL hockey playoffs (sans Canucks) to the untimely demise of a discount airline. Oh, and something about why I should have been an engineer instead of a freelance writer.

Another one bites the dust. Carl Nelson has been living in Hong Kong for some time now, but he is originally from Vancouver. He travels back from time to time, so he’s clearly not happy about the recent news of Oasis Airlines shutting down for good. Oasis offered more affordable flights than their direct competitors, so now that they are out of the picture, Cathay Pacific might start jacking up their rates again.

Even though my hometown Vancouver Canucks aren’t making it to the post-season this year, I’ll still be watching the road to the Stanley Cup for other teams. Fellow hockey fan Ed Lau has come forth with his first round NHL playoff predictions. I’m not sure if the Habs will get the sweep (they should win), but I do agree with the Avs and Rangers getting their respective upsets.

What about Bob? Mr. Buskirk has been a content creator for a number of years, so he’s learned a trick or two about making deadlines without having to stress out about them. One of the best strategies that he has come up with to date is to work a day ahead, making extensive use of the timestamp feature. Having a routine helps too.

Can you be arrested for just thinking something? According to a recent post by Mark Sierra of MeAndMyDrum.com, yes you can. A man got arrested for soliciting sex from a minor, or at least, someone who he thought was a minor. As it turns out, it was a sting operation and the “minor” was really a police officer. As reprehensible as it is to want to solicit sex from a minor, the man arrested for the crime never actually committed a crime. He just thought he did.

As a freelance writer who works from home, I get asked all the time when I’m going to get a “real job.” My response is that I already have a real job; I own and run a freelance writing business. Fellow entrepreneur Chris Bibey ran into a similar situation the other night when he had a discussion with an elderly gentleman. The old man told Chris that he “shoulda been an engineer.” The assumption that the man made was that “being a freelance writer is nice but you can’t make any money.” The sad thing is that it’s not only the older generation that thinks this way.
