Michael, I actually had the same problem with my top commentators from the month of August but I have a much easier suggestion for you if this happens again.

Rather than counting up all of the comments from the month, simply log into your MySQL admin account and write a custom query to return you the list of comments from the month grouped by the author. Basically you can use the same query used by the Top Commentator plugin but add a condition where the comment_date field is like ‘2007-08%’.
