When I first saw that contest by Ashwin I had a good feeling it was a scam and that is why I never participated.

As ContestBlogger points out, there are so many other ways that it could have been done to make it less transparent. However, depending on the motivation, it may have just been a ploy to boost up the various rankings of the site to turn and burn on selling it.
